High Five for Fall

It doesn’t feel like fall today.  There is a brick wall of stifling heat right outside the door.  But Labor Day Weekend is upon us, and Mr. FS informed me this morning that the Notre Dame Football Season kicks off tomorrow, so it must be fall, right?  Full disclosure, I don’t really care much for football, and haven’t watched an ND football game with any interest since eye candy Brady Quinn graduated. But the prospect of a Saturday afternoon spent lounging in front of the TV with some game-time snacks, a long weekend, and the fact that the Fall TV Preview issue of EW arrived today, made me realize how much I am looking forward to the arrival of my very favorite time of year.  Here are five things I am looking forward to this fall:

  1. The return of my favorite TV shows.  My excitement for fall grows when the previews for fall TV start airing. I’ve waited all summer to find out who killed Rosie Larson, and distraught that Holder might be a dirty cop, so The Killing better hurry up and return.  Modern Family is my favorite (I swear the creators spied on my husband before creating the Phil Dunphy character). Glee and 90210 are my other can’t-miss shows. I heart teen dramas.
  2. Fall nail polish.  While I haven’t seen it in person yet, Chanel’s Peridot is a bit so-so (although their fall makeup colors do not disappoint). Metallic green nails?  It’s weird to me.  When it comes to fall polish, I like dark.  Beth WA recently shared a link to the Essie fall collection, and Carry On and Power Clutch are on my to-buy list.
  3. Apples.  I started making crock-pot applesauce last year, and can’t stop thinking about it.  When I’m more blog savvy, I’ll post a link to the blog with the recipe.  In the meantime, I’m also going to be checking out the overnight sensation Crock Pot Girls facebook page for other delicious and convenient ways to use my Crock Pot(s) this fall.  Update: Crock Pot Applesauce by Stephanie O’Dea.  I add cardamom to mine before cooking, it gives it a little more of an apple pie filling taste…
  4. New music from my favorite front man.  I may or may not have a slight obsession with Tom DeLonge, of Blink-182 fame.  I met him last year.  It was the best day EVER (aside from my wedding day and the births of my children, of course).Blink-182 has not released an album of new music since 2003.  Their new album Neighborhoods will be released on September 27.  To say I’m a little excited would be quite an understatement.  And Tom’s other band Angels and Airwaves ALSO has a new album this fall.  Love: Part Two will be released in November.  They rock. Even if you don’t like Blink-182, you should check them out.
  5. Clooney-palooza. Mr. George Clooney has two movies coming out this fall. The Descendants and The Ides of March. One of them also stars everyone’s favorite street-fight-breaker-upper.

What are you looking forward to this fall?

My celebrities, my friends.

This morning as I was on my daily walk before work, I found myself smiling to myself as I thought of a couple I know that recently announced that they were expecting.  I smiled because I was so happy for them.  I think they will make fantastic parents, and the child will have so many opportunities for greatness because of that.

The dad is an artist and an extremely successful business man, and the mom has a really lovely, supportive family.

So, I smiled as I thought of this couple, you know, my friends, Beyonce and JayZ.

Girls Night Out

This weekend was my sister’s shower and bachelorette party.  I am her matron of honor (read: older, married bridesmaid of slightly elevated status).  Her dear friend from high school is her maid of honor (read: younger, hip bridesmaid of slightly elevated status).  Together, we planned and hosted the two events.  It was a fabulous weekend.  While I love to plan parties, my perfectionistic tendencies tend to take over, making me a bit of a basket case in the days leading up to the event (hence the glaring absence of Beth FS authored postings in the very first week of our blog). However, once the day arrived and everything was ready to go, I decided to take some good advice that Beth WA has offered to me many a time, and SURRENDER.  What resulted was a super fun weekend of good old-fashioned girl time.  The weekend flowed well, and I think a great time was had by all. It was filled with fun and laughter.  My sister has a great group of friends, who are hilarious and fun to be around. Add a few equally hilarious and fun to be around family members, and two slightly-older-than-the-rest-of-the-crowd friends/co-bloggers and the good times rolled…

The 2 Beths go to a Bachelorette Party

Beth WA here, and I am just getting ready to head out the door to go to Beth FS’s baby sister’s shower and bachelorette party.  I say ‘baby’ sister, because she is 9 years our junior.

It should be a fun time hanging with the twenty somethings.  And by fun time, I mean I am terrified I will not be able to keep up.

Hopefully we can make it as late as these kids!  Pictures to follow…

Ryan Gosling Breaks Up NY Street BRAWL | TMZ.com.

If Beth FS were not busy this week planning her baby sister’s shower and bachelorette party extravaganza for the weekend, I know she would be all over this story.  She loves her some Ryan Gosling.

Now, when my husband saw the story on the news tonight while we were eating dinner, his reaction, “Staged.”

Men.  They just don’t understand our Hollywood Crushes, Bethie!

Update: Beth FS here. No one questions the integrity of The Gos.  Mr. WA is dead to me.

Back to School Jitters

It’s Beth WA here, and tomorrow is my first day of school.  It will be my eleventh year teaching, and I *still* get the jitters the night before the first day.  I am usually up  most of the night, thinking of things I hadn’t thought of before.  Usually these thoughts could probably not be considered, what’s the word I am looking for here, oh yeah, rational.

What if I don’t wake up to my alarm?  What if I can’t remember anybody’s name?  What if I try to talk and nothing comes out of my mouth?  What if I forget the schedule?  What if there is a huge discipline problem that I can’t resolve?  What if I forget my books?  What if …

But I try to make these thoughts useful, and think that most of my students are probably in their beds going through similar panic.

And so I like to view these irrational thoughts as a way to relate to the student on the first day of school rather than the annoying voices in my head that are keeping me from getting some sleep!
